Project Details :

‘Diabetes and Healthy Lifestyle’ project will target people aged 40+, aimed at Rochdale BAME community especially those at high risk of heart disease.

Participants will attend weekly sessions which will provide an open place for people to meet talk about their health and concerns, get advice and information from professionals.

In addition, they will learn about healthy choices around positive lifestyle, healthy eating, weight management, smoking cessation, diabetes, blood pressure, managing stress and sleep hygiene.

Physical Activity

NICE recommend taking either 2 ½ hours of moderate intensity physical activity or 1 ¼ hours of intense exercise. (Walking, Swimming, Cycling, jogging, skipping, football).

Weight Loss

Guideline issued by NICE recommend those that are overweight aim to lose weight gradually until a healthy BMI is achieved.

Diet

The general dietary advice from NICE to reduce risk of type 2 diabetes is to decrease intakes of fat and increase intake of dietary fibre.

What We Did :

At a Glance...

Each year in the UK, 5% to 10% of people diagnosed with prediabetes go on to develop type 2 diabetes.

Final Results :

The project is unique as it offered participants the necessary information on how to take control of their health by adopting positive lifestyle and behaviour change that ultimately reduces their chances of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Other benefits from the project includes, providing necessary information on living and staying healthy. Bringing people together for friendship and connecting them to resources within their community for optimal health and wellbeing.
